Backflow testing FAQs

Questions about backflow testing

Questions Lake Arrowhead, CA property owners ask about backflow testing and backflow prevention.

Talk to a person
What is the difference between an RPZ and a double check valve?
Both have two independent check valves. An RPZ adds a relief valve between the checks that discharges water to atmosphere if the checks leak, which is why it is required on high-hazard connections.
Why is water dripping from my RPZ relief valve?
A steady drip usually means debris is holding the first check open or the relief valve diaphragm is worn. A cleaning or a rebuild kit fixes most cases.
Does my lawn sprinkler system in Lake Arrowhead, CA need a backflow preventer?
Almost every US plumbing code requires one on irrigation, since fertilizer, pesticide and standing water at the heads can siphon back. The device type depends on local code and how the system is laid out.
What is a cross-connection?
Any point where drinking water piping can come into contact with a non-potable source. Common examples are a hose in a bucket, a boiler fill line and an irrigation system.
Who sends the test report to the water utility?
The tester usually files it, either on the utility's paper form or through its online portal. Ask for a copy for your own records.
